Spherical Shield Breakdown

First, we start off in Houdini to create the procedural setup for mesh creation.
I've got a tutorial on my YouTube channel if you want to check it out:

Next, I added vertex colour to the edges for highlights in Unreal Engine. I also separated the geometry and created UVs so I can use world position offset in the engine and play with the geometry using various noises and gradients.

If you're interested in the textures I used,

I've got some substance tutorials on how to create them. You can check them out here:

From a gameplay perspective, I wanted to add an effect demonstrating when a shield might be at 50% or lower of its health to communicate that to the player.

I've modified world position offset and fresnel over time to achieve this quick effect.

To destroy the sphere, I've added more effects and used sphere material parameters at the same time to make the shield disappear.

Here is the whole sequence again.

Thanks for checking it out! If you want to learn more and create it from scratch in Unreal Engine or Unity, Check tiers below.
